MAC & MHAC

The 2021 MAC Annual Meeting will be held jointly with the Midwest Historical Archaeology Conference (MHAC) October 7-9th at the Kellogg Center on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. We will have two separate calls for papers as noted below. Aside from this organizational separation, this will be joint meeting with integrated events and topics spanning the interests of both organizations. The MHAC traditionally has a conference theme and this year the theme will focus on what it means to communicate archaeology. The MAC welcomes papers and posters on any aspect of Midwestern archaeology, both prehistoric and historic.

 

Hotel and Parking

The MAC & MCAH Joint Annual Meeting will be held at the Kellogg Conference Center on the campus of Michigan State University. Conference rates are below and rooms will be held for the event at these prices until September 13th. Please make your reservations following the instructions below by September 13th. Reservations made after such date will be subject to room availability, and standard rates will apply. Parking is complimentary for overnight guests. For those not staying at Kellogg, the parking fee is $1.50 per hour with a $12.00 maximum.

Registration Steps and Options

Regular registration is now open and registration must occur prior to submission of abstracts. Regular registration rates are in effect until September 30th and should be purchased online through the MAC website. After September 30th, all registration must be done in person at the meeting with on-site rates. The possibility remains that COVID19-related mandates will necessitate the pivot to an online format; should this occur, registration fees will be significantly reduced.

Registration fees are below and apply to both MAC and MHAC members. 

A digital version of the meeting program with abstracts will be available as a pdf file on the website and on a downloadable app.  One paper copy of the meeting program is included with the registration fee when purchased online. No extra paper copies of abstracts will be available at the meeting.  

Registration fees include meeting workshops (some with lunch), coffee breaks, reception appetizers (cash bar), and the banquet.

Registration Steps

1. Look through and decide which registration option from the list below is most appropriate for you.

2. Make sure you are logged into your MAC user account (or create a new account if you don't have one yet) and visit your My Account page.

3. On your My Account page:

   • Scroll down to the MAC Annual Meeting banner and click on the blue button to complete the MAC Presidential Task Force anti-harassment policy certification (see Behavioral Expectations section below). 

   • Purchase your registration. Make sure to submit your meeting preferences at this time as well.

   • Submit abstracts to symposia and presentations (for MAC members only)

   • Double check or edit your "My Meeting Preferences" for receptions and workshops.

Session Title: Midcontinental Cuisine: Recent Archaeological Explorations of Food and Cooking in the Heartland

Session Organizers: Susan M. Kooiman, Jodie A. O’Gorman, Autumn M. Painter, Jeffrey M. Painter

Topical Statement: Cuisine, those practices of identifying, obtaining, preparing, and consuming food, has become a focal point of archaeology over the last decade, providing insight into many different aspects of human society. Building on the archaeological root concepts of subsistence and diet, cuisine allows us to examine multifaceted relationships between people and their food, such as how it is used in the creation and assertion of cultural identity and other ideologies, its integral role in economies, and in social change. Archaeologists working in the Midcontinent are finding new ways of examining cuisine and are carving out fresh insights about ancient foodways. In this symposium, we bring together scholars working on issues across time and space and employing a variety of methods and perspectives to understand culinary behaviors and traditions of past societies.

 

Workshops and Roundtable

3D Digitization, Preservation, and Access in Archaeology and Heritage (Non-Student) Pre-Meeting Workshop

Thursday 9:00 – Noon  (12 person limit, over 12 will be placed on a waiting list)

Intended for scholars and practitioners with no prior experience, this workshop will provide a practical introduction to 3D digitization in archaeology and heritage. Exploration of core 3D capture technologies will be accompanied by hands on demonstrations of photogrammetry and structured light scanning. Discussions will emphasize sustainable workflows, and situate 3D capture in the broader landscape of digitization, preservation and access.  Throughout the workshop, we will privilege practical, lower cost approaches to digitizing, preserving, and providing access to archaeology and heritage materials.  The workshop will also discuss practical workflows for different settings - including collections based digitization, field-based digitization, and community digitization. Beyond issues of technology and workflow, the workshop will also pay particular attention to the ethical implications and legal aspects of digitizing, preserving, and providing access to archaeological and heritage materials in 3D.

All Members Workshop to Build an Inclusive MAC Culture

Friday October 8th 11:30 – 1:00 (Lunch is provided with pre-registration)

In 2019, in response to the MAC membership, the MAC Anti-Harassment Task Force was formed and we began working towards shaping an inclusive culture in our organization. Building on the initial 2020 online workshop, the MAC Board and Task Force cordially invite and encourage all MAC members to attend this workshop. Lunch is provided.

During this engaging 90-minute workshop, participants will explore best practices for building and sustaining a MAC culture where people feel welcomed and valued for their perspectives and experiences. This session specifically focuses on critical individual knowledge and skills related to inclusion and belonging, how to create optimal spaces for MAC conversations and conference sessions, and identifying and successfully navigating through disagreement and conflict.

Be sure to signup for this on your My Meeting Preferences during registration.  While on-site registration for the workshop is possible, there will be a limited number of “extra” lunches available – please register before the meeting to insure we have a lunch for you.

Student Workshop: 3D Digitization in Archaeology & Heritage

Saturday 11:30 – 1:00 (Lunch provided, limit 20 participants)

Roundtable: A Sustainable Future for the Wisconsin Northern Lakes Project Collections (Updated)

Friday 5:00 – 7:00 4:00 – 6:00 pm (Hors d'oeuvres and cash bar, limit 30 participants) Hosted by the Logan Museum of Anthropology, Beloit College

In the 1960s, Robert J. Salzer directed the Wisconsin Northern Lakes Project. The resulting collections (>150,000 artifacts from 88 sites) are housed at the Logan Museum of Anthropology. The Paleo-Indian through Historic phase sequence defined on the basis of this material serves as northern Wisconsin’s culture-historical framework. These collections were rehoused in 2006-2008, increasing their accessibility.

To honor Bob Salzer’s memory, we invite participants to reflect on the NLP, discuss its significance and legacy, and begin planning for the collection’s continued viability and utility. The discussion will strive to:

1. Identify the level of interest and the value of the NLP collection to midwestern archaeology.
2. Outline an NLP strategic plan.
3. Identify resources for long-term support of the collection.

MSU Campus Archaeology Program Tour

Dr. Stacey L. Camp, Director of the MSU Campus Archaeology Program, will host a walking tour of archaeological and historical sites on Michigan State University’s campus. NOTE: Please be prepared to walk with very little opportunity for sitting down during this tour. The tour will be entirely outdoors, so please be prepared in case of inclement weather. For those who are unable to walk or stand for long periods of time, we have several digital tours available that will be updated on this website closer to the conference dates.

A tour for MAC members will be on Friday afternoon while the a tour for MHAC members will take place on Saturday afternoon. The limit is 20 people per tour. See the schedule for times. 

 

Receptions (updated)

Receptions are planned for Thursday and Friday nights. The Thursday evening we will be outside on the Kellogg Center’s East Patio. If inclement weather occurs, the reception will be in the Lincoln Room. The pre-banquet reception will be on Friday. Cash bar will be available during the banquet. 

Please indicate whether you plan to attend the receptions while you are setting your My Meeting Preferences. This is not required for attendance, but helps the organizers make sure there will be enough appetizers. 

Awards Banquet (Previously known as the Birds of a Feather Banquet)

The cost of the banquet is included in the registration for the meeting. Please indicate your meal preference on the My Meeting Preferences form (either when you first sign up for the meeting or later from your My Account page. 

We are trying something new at the Saturday night banquet!  Rather than a guest speaker, this year we encourage the membership to spend an evening with others that share an interest in some specific research topic or issue in Midwestern Archaeology. We invite the membership of MAC and MHAC to propose specific topics around which tables of eight participants will be organized. Prior to the meeting, registrants will be asked to indicate their ranked preferences.  The idea is to meet new colleagues who share your interests and to enjoy a pleasant evening discussing related issues and ideas.

Behavioral Expectations

To help prevent incidents of harassment in any form at our annual meetings, the MAC anti-harassment Presidential Task Force has established a policy requiring all annual meeting registrants to certify that they are not currently cited or censured under Title IX, by the Register of Professional Archaeologists, or by any other adjudicating body, or subject to a current restraining or no-contact order issued by a judicial authority. Registration for the annual meeting will not be possible without this certification step being completed. If you have any questions about this policy, please contact the MAC President.

 

Abstract Submissions

This joint meeting invites both members of MAC and MHAC to submit abstracts.  MHAC traditionally has a conference theme and this year the theme is will focus on what it means to communicate archaeology. 

All paper and poster presentation submissions for MAC members will be online through the MAC website.  MHAC members will submit their presentations to Stacey Camp (see full instructions here). Presenters may submit multiple presentations and there is no limit to the number of co-authorships. If a presenter has scheduling conflicts, it is their responsibility to find someone to read their papers.

The MAC welcomes papers and posters on any aspect of Midwestern archaeology, both prehistoric and historic. Papers will generally be 15 minutes in length, but symposia organizers may propose other formats. Abstracts should be no more than 150 words. Symposium organizers will submit an abstract for each symposium online through the MAC website. Symposium submissions must include the symposium title, symposium abstract, and a list of all symposium presentations by contributor(s). Symposium organizers create a unique key code and provide it to presenters – presenters then use this code in their individual submissions.

After you have registered for the meeting, MAC members can start their submission from your My Account page.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: August 15, 2021 EXTENDED through August 31st, 2021

Presenters, symposium organizers, and discussants must be current members of MAC or MHAC and already registered to attend the meeting.  Co-authors not presenting need not be MAC/MHAC members, nor be registered for the meeting unless attending. Those interested in organizing a workshop, forum, roundtable, or discussion panel should contact Jodie O’Gorman at ogorman@msu.edu). 

Standard paper presentations will be 15 minutes in length and we will use PowerPoint.  LCD projectors will be provided. Organized symposia chairs are asked to provide their laptops for sessions and to load presentations.

Presenters must provide their session chair with a PowerPoint file on a jump/flash drive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled start of the session.  Please include the last name of the senior author (or lead presenter) in your file name (rather than just 'MAC21 paper').

Posters: Pinning space is about 5.5 feet high and up to 8 feet long – push pins will be provided.

Student Paper Competition (extended)

The Midwestern Archaeological Conference Student paper competition was created to promote scholarly excellence among students conducting archaeological research in the midwestern U.S.  The MAC student paper competition was created to promote scholarly excellence among students conducting archaeological research in the Midwestern U.S.  Awards will be decided by the MAC student paper committee based on intellectual merit and methodological execution.

• The graduate winner receives a cash prize of $150 plus books solicited by the conference organizer from willing vendors.   
• The undergraduate winner receives a cash prize of $150 plus books solicited by the conference organizer from willing vendors.  In addition, the undergraduate faculty advisor receives a free MAC membership for one year (only one advisor can be designated per student).

Eligibility:

Anyone currently enrolled in a degree granting institution may apply. Students who were eligible for the student paper competition 2020 are also allowed to submit their papers for this year’s competition. Papers must be single authored and be submitted by the competition deadline.

How to Apply:

Email your paper as a pdf or word document to Dr. Melissa Baltus (melissa.baltus@utoledo.edu) with the subject heading: MAC Student Paper Competition by 11:59 PM EST on September 24 29th, 2021.  The paper presented at the conference must have the same content as the manuscript submitted to the competition review committee.  The submitted manuscript must be no more than 10 double spaced pages of text with 12 pt. font.  Accompanying figures, tables, and references cited must be placed on separate pages at the end of the paper and will not count toward the 10 page limit. Papers over 10 pages in length will not be read or otherwise included in the competition.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE:  Extended to Wednesday, September 29th

All submitted manuscripts must include a cover letter with the paper title, abstract, the student’s name, and the degree-granting program and their current status in that program. Undergraduates wishing to designate an advisor must also include the name and affiliation of the advisor. 

The winners of the Competition will be announced at the Annual Business Meeting of the Midwest Archaeological Conference. The winner(s) will receive their prize(s) the following day. The Committee reserves the prerogative to defer the Competition and award in the event of a shortage of entries.
