Indiana Archaeology Month
by Amy L. Johnson, Senior Archaeologist and Archaeology Outreach Coordinator, Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology September 2008 marks the 13th anniversary of a celebration and recognition of the science of archaeology in Indiana. Begun in 1996 as Indiana Archaeology Week, the event quickly grew within the next following years to a full month of activities and outreach. Each year’s successes have built upon the last, and the events which are held all around the state have reached literally thousands of people through the years. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology is proud to coordinate these efforts each year. Archaeology is a critical component of the office’s outreach efforts, and there is strong, continued public interest in what can be learned through archaeology about the past. The “theme” or focus for this year’s Archaeology Month, Travels in Time, features early Hoosier transportation and archaeology related to these types of sites. Sites and features related to canals, roads, railroads, waterways, and more are providing important archaeological information about the past in Indiana. The webpage
is your place to start for additional information. Online you will soon find:
the official Calendar of Events, information on hosting an event, details about
the annual commemorative poster and shirts, a PowerPoint presentation on Indiana
Archaeology Month, and much more. You are encouraged to attend as many of the
exciting events as you can during September!
