The Indiana Department of Natural Resources' Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology (DHPA) has coordinated the second annual Indiana Archaeology Month, and Governor Frank O'Bannon signed the official proclamation declaring September as the month to recognize the importance and contributions of archaeology and what it can teach us about Hoosier history. Archaeology is a key component in helping Hoosiers understand their past and how the past shapes today and our futures. Although Indiana is planning to celebrate its official bicentennial a few years from now, our state has a rich history of people living in it since approximately 10,000 B.C.

Events will take place throughout the month of September and across the state. The public can participate in excavations, learn about archaeological sites and artifacts, try their hand at making stone tools, and much more.
