September 2006 marks the 11th anniversary of a celebration and recognition of the science of archaeology in Indiana. Begun in 1996 as Indiana Archaeology Week, the event quickly grew within the next following years to a full month of activities and outreach. Each year's successes have built upon the last, and the events which are held all around the state have reached literally thousands of people through the years. The Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology (office of the Indiana State Archaeologist) is proud to coordinate these efforts each year. Archaeology is a critical component of the office's outreach efforts, and there is strong continued public interest in what can be learned through archaeology about the past.

The "theme" or focus for this year's Archaeology Month, Unique in Indiana, conveys that Indiana's archaeological heritage is rich, and that the state has not only unique artifacts, but sites. Two hundred years of archaeological investigations in this state have helped us to understand the complexity of the prehistoric and historic peoples who have called this land their homes. For additional information on these exciting designs, the artifacts pictured, and the sites they are from, go to the webpage listed below.

The Indiana Archaeology Month webpage is your place to start for more information. Online you will find: educational and outreach materials, the official Calendar of Events, information on hosting an event, details about the annual commemorative poster and shirts, a PowerPoint presentation on Indiana Archaeology Month, and much more. You are encouraged to attend as many of the exciting events as you can during September!
