Midwest Archaeological Conference, Inc. President Lovis Called the Annual Meeting to Order at 5pm Motion for approval of 2008 minutes was made by Lynne Goldstein and seconded by Robert Sasso and approved unanimously. President Lovis reported that the MAC, Inc. is in good shape overall. He encouraged subscriptions to the MCJA and he commented that the meeting in Iowa City was very well organized. President Lovis thanked conference organizer John Doershuk and his staff. Copies of the Secretary’s report were made available to the membership. Secretary Boszhardt noted that the report contains information on a variety of issues that the Board had and continues to address. He reported the recent election results to the membership. Boszhardt noted that there will be four officer positions open in 2010. President Elect Milner will form a Nomination Committee. Treasurer Egan-Bruhy’s report was also distributed to the membership at the meeting. Egan-Bruhy noted that the report did not include the 2009 conference cost and revenues. She also noted that there are changes to the membership. The MCJA mailing labels will include the most recent active membership year. The MAC will discontinue two-year memberships. Editor Schurr was unable to attend the conference but had submitted a report that was distributed to the membership. President Lovis reported that the board is considering an opportunity with JSTOR and that Editor Schurr is exploring digital input and output options. President Lovis noted that the graphic configurations continue to be a problem for the Editor. He suggested that those submitting articles refer to the guidelines for graphics. Conference organizer John Doershuk reported on the 2009 MAC Conference noting 315 attendees, 153 presentations, including 229 participating co-authors. There were 19 organized sessions, including 8 organized symposia. In addition, $4,600 was donated by 15 organizations. There were 140+ registered for the banquet. Doershuk thanked those that assisted him in preparing the conference. Bill Monaghan reported that the 2010 Annual Meeting will be held in Bloomington, IN at the Indiana University Memorial Union and that the dates have been changed to October 20th-24th, 2010. The format will follow those of the Iowa City conference with Thursday—Saturday sessions, with a field trip to the Angel site on Sunday. President Lovis reported that the 2011 MAC conference will be in La Crosse, Wisconsin. He asked for offers to host the 2012 conference but no offers were made. John Doershuk reported on the Student Presentation Competition Awards. The judging was done by the MCJA editorial board. There were graduate and undergraduates student categories. For the undergraduate category, second place was awarded to Dawn Whitney and Jody Peterson from Normandale Minnesota Community College. First place was awarded to Elizabeth Conzelman from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. Graduate second place was awarded to Tamara Brennan from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and first place was awarded Maria Raviele from Michigan State University. John Doershuk presented boxes of books from the vendor’s tables and acknowledged the Wisconsin Archaeological Society including a complete set of the Wisconsin Archeologist journals including the first 80 years on a DVD. President Lovis presented the Distinguished Career Award to Dr. James A. Brown. Lovis noted that Brown’s nomination consisted of 15 letters of support and read a portion of a summary letter by Dr. Jane Buikstra, who was unable to attend in person, summarizing Dr. Brown’s many and varied contributions to Midwestern Archaeology. Lovis presented Dr. Brown with an engraved glass award. Dr. Brown offered brief remarks humbly accepting the award, thanking all of those who inspire him and complimenting the Midwest Archaeological Conference organization. President Lovis asked those in attendance if there was any new business. None was brought forth. The meeting was adjourned at 5:29pm.
