Midwest Archaeological Conference
October 5, 2007
University of Notre Dame
South Bend, Indiana
Submitted by Robert “Ernie” Boszhardt, Interim Secretary
President Bonnie Styles called the meeting to order at
4:35 pm.
President’s Report:
The President acknowledged Mark Schurr for organizing the conference and
thanked the conference sponsors (Department of Anthropology, University
of Notre Dame; Institute for Scholarship in Liberal Studies, College of
Arts and Letters, University of Notre Dame; Glenn A. Black Laboratory
of Archaeology, Indiana University, Bloomington; Cultural resource Analysts,
Lexington, Kentucky, and Commonwealth Cultural resources Group Inc.).
President Styles also acknowledged the efforts of the MAC Executive Committee
over the past year (William Lovis, President-Elect; Tim Baumann, Treasurer;
Susan Martin, Secretary; John Doershuk, Executive Officer; Mark Schurr,
Executive Officer; and Jan Brashler, MCJA Editor) and the volunteer efforts
of Jamie Kelly who serves as the MAC Web Master. She noted that Secretary-Elect
Kira Kaufman had resigned because she took a position at Florida Atlantic
University. The Executive Committee had appointed Robert “Ernie”
Boszhardt to serve as Interim Secretary, and new elections for this position
will be held in 2008. Finally, the President reported that the MAC had
a good year and is financially sound.
Secretary’s Report:
Outgoing Secretary Susan Martin distributed the minutes of the 2006 business
meeting from Champaign-Urbana and reported on her duties over the past
year. These consisted largely of correspondence and elections, with the
latter requiring the most effort. She reported the election results:
Editor-Elect: Mark Schurr
Treasurer-Elect: Katie Egan-Bruhy
Executive Officer: James Brown
President Styles thanked the nominating committee (John
Kelly, Bill Green, Cheryl Munson, and Jan Brashler), and reported that
the Executive Committee had accepted the Secretary’s Report.
Treasurer’s Report:
Treasurer Tim Baumann distributed budget information sheets and reported
that the organization is doing well financially. Assets are at $42,569.51
with a net gain of $12,662.31. Major expenses were printing of the MCJA
($9,530), the 2006 meeting (approx $6,827.21), SPORG Online Registration
($1,338.91). Credits and Royalties amounted to ($8,000 from Altamira Press),
memberships and donations ($12,181), and the 2006 meeting (approximately
$10,718.54). Treasurer Baumann reported that the membership is currently
at 440, which is about 20 fewer than a year ago.
President Styles noted that the Executive Committee had
accepted the Treasurers Report.
Editor’s Report:
Editor Jan Brashler reported that 14 manuscripts had been received since
October of 2006. Of these, six have been accepted and one rejected with
the others in review. The Fall 2007 issue is at the printer, and the Editor
noted that there is an increasing time lag between submission to the printer
and mailing to the membership. She indicated a 6 month advance time is
needed to get the issues out on time. Editor Brashler also reported that
she is in need of manuscript submissions. One issue is a pattern of authors
not re-submitting after review comments. Approximately 15 manuscripts
were reviewed and not re-submitted over the past 2 years. In order to
encourage manuscript submission, she will e-mail all presenters at the
2007 conference and add a submission information page to the web site
that is geared toward first-time authors.
President Styles noted that the editor’s report
had been accepted at the Executive Committee meeting.
2007 Conference Report:
Conference Organizer Mark Schurr reported that attendance was approximately
300, which is average for the MAC. He indicated that the 2007 Conference
should about break even if not produce a slight profit. The McKenna Conference
Center will send feedback survey forms to all registered attendees. He
then concluded with instructions on how to get to the banquet location.
President Styles, again thanked Mark for organizing the
conference, noting the ease in registration, the quality of the papers,
and the quality of the refreshments that were available throughout the
sessions. Mark added that the online SPORG system worked very well with
only 1 non-electronic paper submission.
| Future Meetings: |
2008---The President noted that the standing offer to
host the 2008 meeting had been recently withdrawn. She noted that
representatives from Michigan State were exploring the possibility
of hosting next fall.
Lynne Goldstein reported that she and Bill Lovis
were checking the possibility of MSU hosting the conference, but
could not commit on such short notice. If MSU is able to host
the conference it will likely be either the weekend of October
11 or 25.
President Styles followed by saying that if MSU
could not host the 2008 conference; she would look to the possibility
of hosting it in Springfield, Illinois.
2009--- John Doershuk reported that
the Iowa City conference location has already been contracted
for the 2009 meeting.
2010--- Mark Dudzik stated that he had
discussed the possibility of hosting the 2010 meetings in Madison,
Wisconsin with other colleagues during this conference and received
encouraging responses. He noted the presence of preserved effigy
mounds in the city and the proximity to Aztalan. He will pursue
this option.

Student Paper Awards: President Styles
reported on the results of the Student Paper Awards for the 2007
conference. There were 5 submissions. Styles thanked the judges
from the MCJA editorial board: Bob Mainfort, Mark Seeman, and
Cheryl Munson. There was a tie for first place. The two award
winners are Lacey Heflin of Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville
who presented: Faunal Analysis of the 2005 Stephenson House
excavations in Madison County, Illinois: The analysis of Socioeconomic
status in the Upland South cultural tradition; and Susan
Spencer of Indiana University, Bloomington for her paper: Cutmarks
on crania at the late Mississippian Mann Site Cemetery, Posey
County, Indiana. Lacey and Susan each received a box of books
that were graciously donated by vendors at the conference.
Distinguished Service Awards: The President
reported the establishment of a Distinguished Service Award for
the MAC. The Executive Committee will draft guidelines and a distinguished
career awards committee will be appointed to review nominations.
Nominations will be sought from the membership with the goal of
offering awards at the 2008 conference.
Bylaws: The president noted that the
current bylaws do not reflect how MAC actually carries out elections
and noted that she appointed an ad hoc committee to recommend
changes to the bylaws to address the election process, including
the possibility of voting online. The ad hoc committee includes
Susan Martin, John Doershuk along with herself.
Acknowledgments: The President concluded
by thanking Susan Martin for her four years of service as Secretary
and noted that Mark Schurr is moving from the Executive Committee
to Editor-Elect. She also welcomed new Executive Committee Members
Katie Egan-Bruhy and Jim Brown, as well as Ernie Boszhardt on
an interim basis.
Larry Conrad rose to announce the passing of
Emily Blasingham, and the president asked for a moment of silence.

Robert “Ernie” Boszhardt
