2003 Annual Report of the Editor

Editorship of the Midcontinental Journal of Archaeology passed to me at the October 2002 Annual Meeting of the Midwest Archaeological Conference. During November 2002 all of the journal files, including manuscripts at various stages of review and revision, were transmitted to me in Beloit WI by outgoing editor William Green. Editorial offices were established at the Consortium for Archaeological Research at Michigan State University. Through the good graces of the Department of Anthropology and the College of Social Science at MSU a part time Editorial Assistant, Megan McCullen was assigned to the journal to assist with the daily management of the office. We also continue to employ Linda Forman as Layout Editor for the journal.

At present the journal continues to be published by the University of Iowa, through a revised agreement with the Office of the Iowa State Archaeologist. However, the Board of Directors is currently in the process of evaluating proposals for movement of the journal to a different publisher.

We hit the ground running. The Spring 2003 issue of the journal, consisting of 106 pages, including an editorial, four articles, and various MAC documents was published only shortly behind schedule. The Fall 2003 issue, containing five articles, is in page proof and will be published shortly. I have attached contents of both issues as an Appendix to this report.

However, submission rates are low. Since taking over the editorship in October 2002 only three new articles have been received: one is in the fall issue 28(2), one is being revised for resubmission, and one has just survived peer review. While I have had several inquiries about publishing either edited festschrift or symposium issues of the journal none of these inquiries have resulted in submissions. We hope to get several submissions of papers from the current MAC 2003 conference. I must underscore the fact that not only MCJA quality, but MCJA survival, is dependent upon regular submissions of manuscripts for review and publication, and urge both officers and members to actively solicit potential papers.

Respectfully submitted,

William A. Lovis, Editor
